While you may not want a rat inside your home, there are many people out there who would prefer to not take some kind of action that would bring an end to the rat’s life. Many value all forms of life, even if it is a rodent. Therefore, they are looking for methods that enable them to remove a rat from their house without causing any injury.
This is where the use of a trap becomes the perfect solution. A trap allows you to safely capture the animal, then release it in another location away from your home so that you don’t have to worry about it becoming an issue for you. This is a very effective way to rid yourself of the rat, but it is only successful if you are able to lower it into the trap. This is where the bait that you are using becomes extremely important.
A Little About Rats
Before discussing what is the best bait to use, it is important to understand a little something about rats first. This will help you in making your determination of what you are going to use to try to capture it.
First off, rats are true omnivores. What that means is that they eat both meat and plants. However, this is not the limitation of a rat. What separates them from almost every other animal is the fact that they will eat just about anything. They will eat rotting food, things that would make you throw up just to smell them. They will eat maggots and other disgusting larvae and insects. They truly believe that the whole world is their buffet.
So, What Do You Use?
Knowing this, the first inclination for most people is the thought that they can use just about anything. Since a rat will eat about any food it can find, they believe that they could just stick anything they can find in their pantry or refrigerator inside the trap and the rat will go for it. This is not the case, however.
A lot of times rats avoid traps because they are not enticed by whatever food is there. Understand that these are animals with an extremely strong sense of smell. That means that the things that are extremely strong in their odor are the things that they are going to be most attracted to. This includes such things as cheese, meat, or other similar products that have a strong smell to them.
While you may find these odors to be far too strong, they are not to a rat at all. They are the very kinds of things that will attract a rat.
You may also want to consider the use of peanut butter. Not only does it have a strong smell, but it is also sweet. Believe it or not, rats also have a sweet tooth. This is a very effective way to trap a rat.
Try these products and you should have quite a bit of success.
